Primer — What Is The Public Opinion On More Regulation Of Tech Services?
This morning, Morning Consult released a new poll finding 41 percent of respondents support a newly announced Federal Trade Commission Tech Task Force. The poll also found that respondents believe the tech industry holds less influence than Hollywood and Wall Street, offering the latest data point that illustrates public opinion of the tech sector.
This Morning Consult poll confirms what a year’s worth of polling has indicated:

The relationship between trust and regulatory appetite is more nuanced than popularly discussed.
—Industry trust does not correlate with regulation concerns. Springboard polling from May 2018 found that, “While Americans trust hospitals and tech companies similarly (67 and 60 percent, respectively), Americans have a net desire against increased regulation of tech by 2 percentage points, while Americans have a net desire for increased regulation of hospitals by 15 percentage points. Likewise, Americans distrust media on net, but are skeptical of government regulation.”

—These findings mirror a Progressive Policy Institute poll, which found two-thirds of respondents would prefer a candidate who says, “We need to be careful about breaking up large American companies…that are innovative and successful.”
